OpenMarket processes over 9 billion messages per year firmly placing us as one of the very largest companies in this field.

If you want to communicate with your customers or allow your customers to communicate with you via SMS text messaging (often called Corporate Messaging), MMS messaging or with Push Notifications, OpenMarket is the partner for you.

OpenMarket’s messaging products fall into these categories:

  • SMS Messaging – Communicate with your customers via SMS.
  • International Messaging – Communicate with customers around the world, or with customers outside of Australia.
  • SMS Advertising – Help monetise your customer communications by allowing adverts to be inserted into your messages and earn a fee in return.
  • Free to send SMS Messaging – Often called freetext. Allow your customers to send you text messages without having to pay.
  • MMS Messaging – Offer a richer multimedia experience when communicating with your customers.
  • Push Notifications – Communicate with your customers via Push Notifications sent in tandem with an app on the consumer’s phone.
  • M2M capability – A more technical solution allowing you to enable or send updates for apps on consumers’ mobile phones using SMS in the background.

SMS Messaging

This graphic is possibly the best way to explain what we mean. In essence, communicate with a customer using their mobile phone. OpenMarket connects to all the operators so that you only have to connect to us.

You can either set up a virtual mobile number, i.e. a mobile phone number that isn’t linked to a specific handset; imagine the difficulty in fielding all the texts when ten of thousands of your customers reply to your message. Or you can set up a short code. This is a shorter number that can be assigned just to your company, or shared with other companies by use of a keyword.

In Australia, these numbers begin with 19 and are either six or eight digits in length. Please be aware the format of a short code is different in different countries, so please check with us on what is possible overseas.

OpenMarket’s hub – which connects you to all the network operators – is extremely reliable and has been tested across multiple geographies and processed billions upon billions of messages.

OpenMarket also only uses either direct connections to operators, or Tier 1 partners who themselves have direct connections to access smaller markets. OpenMarket does not use cheaper more unreliable routes, often referred to as “grey routes”.

International Messaging

OpenMarket’s global corporate messaging footprint allows it to send messages to customers across multiple territories. If you are a brand that thinks globally, this can make communication with your customers easier, or offer you a single “one stop shop” to access your different customer groups in different countries.

You can integrate with OpenMarket, and then using our global hub concept, we can connect your messages to all the carriers in all the markets in which you operate.

Moreover, customers based in Australia are using this service to widen their addressable market beyond Australia, and service providers who use OpenMarket in Europe and the US are using OpenMarket Australia to access customers in Australia and the wider Asia Pacific region.

SMS Advertising

SMS advertisements are typically 20 to 60 characters of text that follow the text of an SMS message. If your business generates SMS content such as weather alerts, game alerts or other similar content, adding SMS ads to these messages can let you tap into a great new revenue stream.

Free to Send SMS

Free to send or Freetext SMS allows your customers to communicate with you via text without incurring a charge. It’s the text equivalent of making a 1800 call from a landline in Australia. A superb service to encourage customers over the threshold of making contact with you.

In the United States, OpenMarket also provides a solution that allows text messages to be received for free. It is normal to pay to receive a SMS message in the States.

MMS Messaging

Sometimes it’s more valuable to engage with your customer with a more multimedia experience. MMS messages provides a straightforward way of doing this. You can use MMS to send a wide variety of content to consumers including video, music, graphics and apps.

This graphic usefully illustrates a typical situation where MMS is used.

OpenMarket allows you to connect to its hub, and then OpenMarket does the hard work of connecting to all the operators.

Push Notifications

With the advent of smart phones and apps, some clients now prefer to send updates and alerts to their customers via Push Notifications. If a consumer has an app on their phone, it’s possible to send a text alert, a badge (small image or number), a sound or a combination of these items.

OpenMarket makes it easy to include Push Notifications in your apps. This graphic shows how the process can work:

  1. Download the OpenMarket documentation
  2. Create an OpenMarket Push Notification Services account
  3. Integrate your application with OpenMarket’s Push Notifications Service
  4. Message your customers!

M2M Capability

M2M or “machine to machine” describes a class of communication where a software application is talking to another software application on the mobile phone, or a hardware device out in the field e.g. a drinks dispenser.

OpenMarket’s services are based on its highly sophisticated and reliable technologies, which places OpenMarket in prime position to help brands and other businesses who want real time communication with their applications in the field.

Through the high profile nature of the clients we have in this space, we cannot publicise any current activities, but we send over 1 billion commands in this way every year.

If you have an application that you think might benefit from M2M SMS capability, please get in touch and we will talk through your requirements, and if appropriate, put you in touch with one of our global technical leads.
